Pros and cons of Corn

Corn is one of the many foods that come with a variety of nutrients that play an important role in the growth of an individual. It is rich in soluble fibers that come in handy in keeping your digestion process smooth. However, it also comes with a variety of disadvantages that may not be helpful to an individual. The following are some of the pros and cons of corn.

 

Pros:

1. It improves digestion: Corn meals are known to contain high amounts of soluble fibers that are instrumental in breaking down food and making digestion easy. The fibers help in smoothening the gut process and make the digestion process complete.

2. Prevents anemia: Corn meals contain a high level of Vitamin B12 that plays an important role in preventing anemia. It also has folic acid that helps in the regeneration of red blood cells thus maintaining the blood content in the body.

3. Increased energy: Corn is one of the richest sources of starch. Starch is broken down to provide a high level of glucose which helps in maintaining energy levels in the body.

4. Lowers cholesterol and improves the flow of blood: Corn has a lower cholesterol content which helps in improving the flow of blood to and from the heart by preventing blockage of the blood vessels.

5. Facilitates weight gain: Corn is one of the rare meals that people eat when they want to gain additional weight. This is especially common in cases where people want to add weight quickly.

6. Prevents diabetes and high blood pressure: Corn also plays an important role in the prevention of diabetes and high blood pressure thanks to its low cholesterol levels.

7. Improves vision: According to research, cornmeal is said to have nutrients that play an important role in improving vision and eyesight.

8. Contains anti-cancer properties: Corn contains anti-cancer properties that help in preventing cancer cells from growing or multiplying in the body.

9. Beneficial during pregnancy: Cornmeal is important for pregnant mothers because it contains folic acid that plays an important role in ensuring blood circulation is constant and consistent.

10. Good for the heart:
Corns are said to be good for the heart because they contain good cholesterol that does not block the blood vessels from transporting nutrients and oxygen.


Cons:

1. May cause allergic reactions: Cornmeal is known to cause allergic reactions in many of its consumers because of its high fiber content.

2. Causes bloating:
Corn contains high levels of starch that may cause bloating of the stomach. This is because, during digestion, the starch produces a lot of gas that leads to stomach bloating.

3. May sometimes cause indigestion: The soluble fibers in corn facilitate smooth digestion and absorption of food into the body. However, the insoluble fibers may negatively affect this process and cause indigestion.

4. May cause intestinal irritation: Researchers have found that cornmeal can sometimes lead to intestinal irritation thanks to the high fiber content.

5. Causes of tooth decay: Cornmeal has also been associated with tooth decay because of the nature of corn seeds. They sometimes get stuck and attract bacteria that cause tooth decay.

6. Increase in weight: While some people like corn for the fact that it causes weight gain, this may be a problem for others who prefer to lose weight rather than gain it.

7. Leads to lethargy: The high levels of starch and glucose found in corn produce too much energy which may sometimes lead to excessive hyperactivity and then lethargy afterward.

8. It is not cheap: Cornmeal is expensive to find especially in urban centers where it is not grown naturally. For this reason, most people prefer to have other alternatives that are cheaper and readily available as opposed to corn.

9. It may sometimes affect the chemical composition of the soil: In some cases, corn is produced and planted using chemicals used in the production of genetically modified foods. This may affect the composition of the soil by adding chemicals that may not be conducive for other crops.

10. Requires too much work to process: Corn meals require too much work to process. Apart from the corn seeds, other processed corn meals require too much work and time to process.
